Position Description: Chief Human Resources Officer
The primary responsibility of the Chief Human Resources Officer for the University of Tennessee system is linking the university’s strategies and policies to its faculty and staff, its most important asset. The CHRO is a member of the senior staff reporting directly to the president. S/he is responsible for strategy and policy development for all human resource functions at the system level, collaborating with the campus/institute human resource officers for implementation. The CHRO will work closely with system and campus communication officers responsible for internal communication to develop consistent and accurate messages as they relate to human resource functions.
Duties and responsibilities include: implementing strategic plan priorities related to HR, leading and managing change, assuring a quality performance review process, developing human resource policy, developing compensation and classification policies and plans, managing benefit programs, developing succession planning strategies, developing training and professional development plans, overseeing consistent implementation of policies and programs, managing human resource information systems and communicating with employees regarding human resource issues.
An advanced degree in human resource management/development or a related field is preferred. At least 10 years of progressive broad-based human resource experience as a leader in a large, complex organization is required. Experience in higher education is preferred. Candidate should have a passion for excellence and demonstrated leadership skills and abilities. Should possess high technical competence in all human resource areas including recruitment, employee relations, classification, compensation, information systems, employee and organizational development, benefits, and diversity initiatives. Must have excellent oral and written communication skills and demonstrated commitment to and knowledge of equal employment opportunity and affirmative action.
